acorn hike
To commence late Fall we decided to celebrate with a hike in the woods.
We are lucky to pretty mountains in our back yard, so that is where we headed…
I took a large, metal old-fashioned milk pail, as one should when headed for the mountains.
Halfway up our trail at a random location I screamed- STOP!!!
Lo and behold there were lovely old acorn trees and bushes, bushes or trees?
So we got our littles out of the car, the 4-yr-old and 1-yr-old and made them help.
Mainly me since only I seemed to see the full potential of withered and half-eaten acorns. But still we gathered the nuts and the caps and all that was left.
At first I planned to make acorn cookies, in the same fashion and intent that Carol made them in the The Walking Dead. But have you ever tasted an acorn? Well we soon discovered why they’re not a regular commodity next to the walnuts and almonds… They are BITTER! But still I gathered because they’re just. so. quaint.
Along the way, and much to my husband’s dissaproval, I also gathered that itchy, flighty rabbitbrush weed that’s so useless but just sooo pretty!
And also visited my favorite graffiti waterfall bridge!
Now what do I do with all of these acorns??
